About the Press

Klisia is a biblically-centered press focused on open-access, high-quality books that strengthen the Church. All our books are free in the digital format, peer-reviewed by academics, making theology and biblical studies accessible everywhere.

As theological educators, one of the challenges we noticed in countries like Liberia, Mozambique, and Brazil is the lack of good, accessible resources. The greatest challenge for the Church in our generation is the training of pastors where the Gospel is growing the most. Pastors in Africa, Latin America, and Asia struggle to receive a formal education, as most have more than one job to sustain their families. We believe they deserve access to the best we can produce without putting additional stress on their precarious finances. It is from this need that Klisia was born.

Klisia (κλισία) is a Greek word that occurs only once in the New Testament (hapax legomenon) and means “a group of people eating together” (BDAG). It is found when Jesus multiplies five loaves of bread and two fishes:

(Now about five thousand men were there.) Then he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.” (Luke 9:14, NET)

Biblical and theological studies are to be enjoyed together as Church. Therefore, all our books are published as open-access, with a CC BY 4.0 license. We are members of Crossref as we share the goal of making connections and making scholarly work easy to find, link, and cite.
